Keep on saving time on Dielectric Strength Tests

The Lean-Production-focused evolution for dielectric strength test on multicore cables continues!

20-05-2020

The dry dielectric strength test on cables is fundamental to guarantee the quality of the product to the customer and avoid disputes. When the test is performed on multiple cables with or without a screen, it can take a long time and therefore be onerous. That is why is necessary to reduce the test time to the essential and to minimize costs.

Since several years, SIF applies the concepts of LEAN PRODUCTION* to its projects and has continued to innovate and improve its testing systems by applying the Kaizen system since the introduction of the commutation system in 2013, allowing its customers to save hours of work!

* The  LEAN PRODUCTION term identifies an industrial philosophy inspired by the Toyota Production System, which aims to minimize waste to the point of eliminating them.

In particular, the latest system built for the NEXANS group BERK-TEK company in the USA allows to:

  • connect only once a maximum of 8 cable bobbins up to 8 conductors each

  • set the sequence of tests that the system will perform automatically on the touch screen PLC display
  • check before starting the test if there is any dead short circuit between the conductors
  • carry out the dielectric strength test automatically, through 6 schemes to perform the various combinations between the conductors with the application of voltage    and test time to each scheme
  • detect which is the conductor in short circuit
  • search automatically which spool is short circuited and exclude it from the test
  • continue the test automatically on the other bobbins

This system and its many accessories supplied simplifies and speeds up the work of the operator, who will already know what the faulty spool and conductor are. He will only have to search for the exact point of the short circuit with a locator upon completion of the test.

In addition, the plant has been designed with two test boxes so that during the performance of the test in a fence, it is possible to connect in safety the bobbins for the next test in the other one, thus optimizing the maximum of time.
